January 24, 2009 New York, NY
Happy Chinese New Year! I have to say, I don't remember ever celebrating this holiday so thoroughly before. Not since the year of my birth came around last ... Long live the Year of the Bunny! It may have to do with my current extreme proximity to Chinatown, or the seemingly eternal desire of my friends to eat Chinese food this week. Particularly adventurous was my trip to Fuleen, a famous seafood resto in the deep labyrynthian vortex of Chinatown Manhattan (where streets have no name ... and make no sense.) A fish in a tank fell in love with me. There is photographic evidence. Then I ate some of the most delicious seafood I've ever tasted. Deep fry it and put it in my mouth! Tonight, to celebrate even further I'll be heading over to DUMBO for the Shanghai Mermaid Chinese New Year party. But not before I have dinner with my new manager and hit the M83 show at the Fillmore. I have on my celebratory red = luck New Year's gown and hope I can wear these shoes for the next 12 hours ... I guess we'll find out. x

My goodness was it ever a late one last night! I had the best time ever performing in the simply magical Shanghai Mermaid speakeasy cabaret show in Brooklyn. Aesthetic goddess Juliette Campbell along with her partners in crime Tanya and Josh put on, literally, the best party I've ever been to in my life. This time it was held in the Red Hook neighbourhood in Brooklyn's oldest firehall - currently a metalwork studio called Hyde. I cannot say enough for the sheer glory of the event and can't wait to return for another show soon as possible!
My time in NYC has been truly amazing and everyday has been an adventure. I never want to leave, but alas. Played some great shows, did a LOT of walking and met loads of crazy interesting people. Will write more about all my various exploits later, but now it's time to sleep as the road will be calling me northwards in the morning. Adieu sweet Brooklyn and see you soon. x

Am having such a blast in Brooklyn and I never want to leave! But, I'm leaving in the morning. Tonight I got taken to the Shaghai Mermaid 1920s cabaret-style benefit @ Superfine in DUMBO. It was AMAZING. Everyone was so talented, with particular musical kudos to Mamie Minch who I really enjoyed. Played a great gig last night with Kim Beggs and Natalie Edelson from the Yukon... lovely ladies. Afterwards my pal Katy Rose Cox's band Shotgun Party (from Austin) seriously rocked the house!!! Yeeeow! Now, better see if I can sleep a bit, for tomorrow is a long long drive. Lotsa love.

Hailed as one of Canada's "hottest young guitar players," Kristin Sweetland has been much-lauded for her intricate instrumental guitarwork, rich vocals and enchanting stage presence. A born performer and true road-warrior, Sweetland brings her wild tales of adventure to the stage in style. Her albums include Own Sweet Time, released in Fall 2007, and her critically acclaimed debut, Root, Heart & Crown. Both albums were produced by Juno award-winning multi-instrumentalist Ken Whiteley, and showcase Sweetland's stellar guitar playing alongside powerful melodies and deeply intelligent songwriting. Musically, Sweetland draws on broad influences from folk/roots, classical, flamenco, world music and rock-n-roll traditions in ways that are rich, delicious, utterly refined and unmistakably Sweetlandish.
