Brooklyn, NY

It's Saturday night and only just past the witching hour... And I'm already back in my hotel room. I'm such a good girl. It was a long and successful day in New York City! Sunny, mild, and thoroughly replete with beautiful people, raw oysters, and polka-dots.

I left the Great White North on Thursday, one day later than I had planned. Waited out the big Leapday storm front that blew through, then hit the road on Ladyship's first official roadtrip! I've said it before, but I LOVE MY NEW CAR. And it's a good thing, cause mama's goin' for a loooong drive.
Next stop, the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Then onto North Carolina, Tennessee, and all the way to Texas! Just in time for SXSW.

Tomorrow night I'm playing a sweet little show in the city at Caffe Vivaldi... one of my favourite spots. If you're anywhere near Manhattan, New York, please come by and say bonjour!  Other than that, I'm pretty much on vacation. I'll be spending my time reposing on sunny park benches, hiding in dark alleys, and enjoying a multitude of cultural attractions. Photographs sure to follow... I imagine.

And speaking of cultural attractions, last night I took myself on a date to a Pat Benatar concert! Seriously. I've always loved her. Since the first time I saw the We Belong video on MuchMusic, back in the day. In the light of it's crisp-white ripped-sheet dreaminess (with the occasional chartreuse punch) I became a fan forever. She still sounds great.

The highlight of the concert for me, however, was a true moment of  Sweetlandish magic. Pat's longtime guitar player and husband Neil Giraldo was about to throw a guitar pick into the audience. At that moment I decided that it had to be my new lucky guitar pick. So I looked up and smiled from the middle of the crowd. Somehow Neil spotted me and mouthed "Do you want it?" I nodded. He said, "Put your hands up." So I did. He threw the pick and it flew over rows and rows of writhing arms. And it hit me in the face. Any guess as to what song they were playing? Seriously.

And that's not even the punchline of the story, as after the pick hit me in the face it disappeared into the void, and I couldn't find it anywhere. I made a joke to the woman standing beside me that I would "probably find it later."  But I was confused. How could the lucky guitar pick God giveth, and then taketh away so quickly?  Well, I was right. Getting into the bath last night I found it. Neil Giraldo did in fact throw a guitar pick across a crowd of people and right down my cleavage. Seriously.

The End.

June 15, 2011
Brooklyn, NY

Word up from the heart of sunny downtown Brooklyn! Me, myself and my metro card have been roaming the streets of NYC all week on a bit of a working vacation. I left lovely uber-rural Rappahannock county Virginia and rolled right into the concrete innards of the big city... A bit of a polar shift. But balance in one's life is important. My memories of my time in the country are so sweet. The silhouettes of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the periwinkle dusk... The sparkling of the fireflies, the twinkling of stars... Not to mention I got to drive a truck though a field down a mountain. And then back up! I also went kayaking, rump bumping, and had a Virginia mud bath. After which my friend proceeded to catch me a fish and then cook it for dinner. All in a day's work.

Here, a day's work is a different thing altogether. I put on my Sweetlandish heels and take on the town. Went on rainy adventures to Central Park, had a fantastic gig at Banjo Jim's, made strange new friends and caught up with some old ones, hid in dark alleys, waited on a thousand trains... And of course, made a few excellent purchases. As well, it must be noted that the gentlemen on the streets of downtown Brooklyn are quite friendly indeed. Canadians on street corners are far too polite to tell you how much they like your outfit, or how attractive you look on any particular day. Judging from the amount of times I heard the phrase "Lookin' good, white lady!"  I think it might have to be the name of my new album.

I also got to see some great music while in town.  Particular mentions to The Silver Daggers from Tallahassee, FL who played a set right after me on Friday night. They were amazing and so lovely that I had to go see them again the next day! And hier soir, I celebrated my last evening in NYC with pals Blackie and the Rodeo Kings for their CD release show at The Living Room. They were brilliant as always and it was one hell of a time.

And now it's time to pack the van and hit the road. Next stop, Newport, RI! I have an appointment to keep with a certain sailor...

Anchors aweigh,

Brooklyn, NY

Word up from the Park Slope slope! My week in New York City is already more than half over. How did that happen so fast? I've been having an epic time, perhaps the best NYC trip ever. Played a great show last night at CaffĂ© Vivaldi and made some new friends. Then ran over to catch the end of  brilliant cellist Brent Arnold's set at The Living Room ... Made it for the last two songs, and the biggest glass of whiskey I ever done seen. Long live the American free pour.

Tonight I head out to Red Hook for the "Urban Cowgirl Cabaret" show at Jalopy with pal Jan Bell! It's such a magical little venue and I've always wanted to play there. Come on out y'all, for a little cowgirl adventure! But don't forget your umbrella. I feel a thunderstorm coming on ....

Giddyup,

Am in NYC on a secret mission, details tba soon. Have done so much since I've been here I don't even know where to start --- so I won't. News soon. Love and kisses, x K.

Brooklyn, NY

My goodness was it ever a late one last night! I had the best time ever performing in the simply magical Shanghai Mermaid speakeasy cabaret show in Brooklyn. Aesthetic goddess Juliette Campbell along with her partners in crime Tanya and Josh put on, literally, the best party I've ever been to in my life. This time it was held in the Red Hook neighbourhood in Brooklyn's oldest firehall - currently a metalwork studio called Hyde. I cannot say enough for the sheer glory of the event and can't wait to return for another show soon as possible!

My time in NYC has been truly amazing and everyday has been an adventure. I never want to leave, but alas. Played some great shows, did a LOT of walking and met loads of crazy interesting people. Will write more about all my various exploits later, but now it's time to sleep as the road will be calling me northwards in the morning. Adieu sweet Brooklyn and see you soon. x

And P.S. peek at my NYC photos here!

Brooklyn, NY

Am having such a blast in Brooklyn and I never want to leave! But, I'm leaving in the morning. Tonight I got taken to the Shaghai Mermaid 1920s cabaret-style benefit @ Superfine in DUMBO. It was AMAZING. Everyone was so talented, with particular musical kudos to Mamie Minch who I really enjoyed. Played a great gig last night with Kim Beggs and Natalie Edelson from the Yukon... lovely ladies. Afterwards my pal Katy Rose Cox's band Shotgun Party (from Austin) seriously rocked the house!!! Yeeeow! Now, better see if I can sleep a bit, for tomorrow is a long long drive. Lotsa love.
